February 2018: Volunteer of the Month

GGO is thankful for our amazing volunteers! The volunteer of the month for February is Alex Frkovic. Alex is a 1st grade teacher at Uplift Meridian Preparatory in Fort Worth, TX. He graduated from Stanford in 2016 with a BA in Psychology and is currently working towards his MS in Educational Studies from Johns Hopkins where he will graduate this May. We asked him a few questions to highlight his dedication and hard work

Q: How long have you been volunteering with GGO? 
A: “I’ve been volunteering with GGO for 6 months now.”

Q: What originally drew you to the organization?
A: “I loved student-teaching 6th grade science last year and have a passion for the outdoors so I thought GGO would be the perfect opportunity to use these two passions to help educate urban youth about science and the outdoors.”

Q: Do you have a favorite experience or memory of your time as a volunteer?
A: “My favorite experience from GGO was our overnight camping trip last semester. The students and leaders really bonded as a program and we all had tons of fun.”

Q: Why do you like volunteering with GGO?
A: “I really enjoy volunteering for GGO because it gives me a chance to interact and learn with 5th grade students, as I normally teach 1st grade during the week. I love being able to create long-lasting relationships with my crew mates as well.”

Q: What kind of bear is best?
A: “The polar bear is definitely the best bear!!”

Q: Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
A: “Advice for future volunteers: be yourself, take risks, and don’t be scared to make mistakes, that’s how you learn the best!”

Q: If you could be fluent in another language what would it be?
A: “I would definitely be fluent in Spanish so I could better communicate with my students’ families.”
